MCLEAN CO., Ill. (WFIE) - The McLean County Fiscal Court passed a resolution calling for the United States Postal Service to take action and improve their services.

Officials say this stems from months of delivery issues from the postal service.

The resolution asks for three things. First, it requests the USPS take “immediate and proactive steps to improve mail delivery services in McLean County, Kentucky, by addressing the root causes of mail delays, lost mail, and inconsistent delivery schedules.”

Second, it asked for increased accountability and communication from the USPS. Finally, the resolution requests federal representatives advocate on behalf of McLean County and its mailing issues.

Judge Executive Curtis Dame says the mail problems are impacting not only residents, but local businesses and the government.

According to Dame, the county is racking up late fees on bills since it takes too long for the bill to arrive and be returned with payment.

“It’s one of those hidden resources that we all take for granted,” Dame says. “What we’ve seen is when it doesn’t go right, we start to see what a negative impact less efficient services can have on what we do day in and day out here.”

Dame says local USPS employees are not at fault, but the problem begins at the regional and federal level.

He says he’s been in contact with legislators to hopefully help resolve this issue, but felt the next logical step was to pass a resolution.

“We’ve known about this problem for a while,” Dame said. “I’ve had a handful of local business owners come to me and relay the issues they’ve had. This is the next step to show that we’re trying to advocate for hopefully a positive solution.”

In the resolution, officials promise to monitor the situation.
