EVSC school warning parents of ‘dangerous’ TikTok trend
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A TikTok challenge is causing headaches for many schools around the country - including one right here in the Tri-State.
Tuesday afternoon, parents of students at North Jr. High received an email from the principal warning about this “concerning” TikTok trend.
Principal Jeff Sincroft says some students have inserted objects into their Chromebook’s USB, charging port and behind the screen to try to create sparks and cause the laptop to smoke.
Schools in other parts of the country have also dealt with the same issue.
A high school in Connecticut was evacuated last week after a laptop caught on fire.
The superintendent of the school told reporters he believes the fire was caused by the trend.
Principal Sincroft says this TikTok challenge is not only dangerous, but is also causing unnecessary damage to their devices.
“Unfortunately, this practice is leading to repair costs that may be passed on to families, as well as disruptions to the education of the students whose devices are impacted,” said the principal in a message to parents.
School officials say they will discipline students who are engaging with the trend.
Parents are asked to talk to their child about the importance of taking care of electronic devices.
