There’s light at the end of the tunnel for ongoing road projects in Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Evansville seems to be overwhelmed with construction zones in every corner of the city.
14 News’ Haley Kerby spent the day talking with officials about some of those projects that are causing headaches for drivers.
“We’ve got a lot of projects going on, I think everyone in Evansville knows that but this is really when everything starts ramping up,” says INDOT PR Director Gary Brian.
As warmer weather takes over the area, construction is inevitable.
“Our roads don’t talk to each other, Mother Nature treats everything the same when deterioration happens, when the roads need improvement, we’ve got to get in there and fit it,” he says.
Construction on Highway 41 on the south end near Washington Avenue is nearly complete.
Officials are hoping to have the orange barrels out of the way within the next month. It’s a different story on the north side.
“We have an approach closure coming up on Morgan in the next week or so, that’s to completely revamp the approach on the west side of the road,” he adds. “Now that we’re working on those southbound lanes, we’ll be working on that periodically as we get everything fixed up on 41 there.”
As for the extensive Lloyd4U project, on the east side...
“Stockwell has reopened to right hand turns and now you can make that through movement,” says Lloyd4U public outreach manager Nicole Minton. “By this summer, we should be driving that displaced left turn hybrid movement at Stockwell.”
And on the west side?
“They’re rebuilding bridges” she says. “You’re going to have more capacity and lanes to travel back and forth on the west side.”
Pothole patching has delayed some of this work.
“The pothole patching is really just to keep things smooth. They don’t have anything to do with the improvements, but it’s something we have to manage when you have so many cars going through,” she says.
However, the entire Lloyd4U project will still be complete by 2028.
“The good news is that everything is on schedule, the last thing we want to see is everything lasting longer than anticipated,” says Minton.
Still, traffic officials are urging caution in work zones and plan ahead even if it does cause some frustration.
“We want you to respect the zone, slow down so that everyone gets home safe,” says Brian.
You can always stay up to date on construction projects in the area including progress with the US 41 improvement plan and the Lloyd4U project.
