OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - UniFirst and Owensboro officially furthered their long-standing partnership Thursday, breaking ground on a $28 million expansion.

“As we break ground today, we recognize this project symbolizes more than just a physical expansion, it represents the next chapter of innovation, stronger customer partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to the Owensboro community,” said Matt Croatti, Senior Vice President of UniFirst.

And while the groundbreaking outside was the focus of the day, inside was a party. Flashing lights, music and dancing filled the room before, during and after a ceremony to mark the groundbreaking.

“This project was part of a record breaking economic development year,” said Claude Bacon with the Owensboro Chamber of Commerce.

The project, which broke ground Thursday, is set to be complete early next year, allowing UniFirst to add more than 100,000 square-feet to their facility.

“Our core values and the mission and the vision that kind of weave together have always been exemplified by the workforce here in Owensboro,” said President and CEO of UniFirst Steve Sintros.

And city and county leaders echoed how UniFirst and Owensboro’s values are aligned, putting the community first, and continuing to invest in the city.

“Just hearing you speak of your commitment to your community, and to your customers, and to this team that you’ve put together is just so impressive. I appreciate that,” said Daviess County Judge Executive Charlie Castlen.

UniFirst leaders hope the expansion can allow them to optimize operations, enhance order accuracy, increase capacity for their customer base and reduce their environmental impact.
