Mater Dei football coach Mike Goebel announces retirement after 28 seasons

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Longtime Mater Dei head football coach Mike Goebel announced his retirement Sunday after 28 seasons in charge.

He has compiled a career record of 270-93.

Goebel led the Wildcats to two state titles in 2000 and 2022.

He was just the 4th head football coach in Mater Dei’s 75 years.

Goebel was a list of the following accomplishments under his belt:

  • 2022 NFHS National HS Football Coach of the y=Year
  • Inducted into IFCA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2023
  • Most wins in SIAC history
  • 4 IHSAA State Runners-Up titles
  • 6 Semistate titles
  • 10 Regional titles
  • 17 Sectional titles
  • 7 SIAC titles
