KENTUCKY (WFIE) - In this Peace of Mind project story, we are learning that Attorney Generals from over a dozen states, including Kentucky, announced lawsuits against social media giant TikTok for damaging the mental health of young users.

The coalition, consisting of 14 Attorney Generals, allege that TikTok violated state laws by falsely claiming its service is safe for young people.

The suits focus partly on the platforms addictive features, including 24/7 notifications and video autoplay, as well as data collection of users under 13 without parental consent.

“They have an algorithm that’s designed to suck our kids in and keep them on as long as possible. And, unfortunately, tragically it’s working," says Rob Bonta, California AG.

In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson said the company strongly disagrees with the claims, calling them inaccurate and misleading.

The full list of states and territories included in that lawsuit include:

  • California
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Mississippi
  • New Jersey
