EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Severe storms passed through the Tri-State overnight and into early this morning. The worst is most likely behind us, but we remain on alert for heavy rain with embedded strong or severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.

The severe weather threat for the rest of the day is much lower than what we experienced last night. Stratiform rain filled in from southwest to northeast across the Tri-State this afternoon. This persistent rain is helping to stabilize the atmosphere, therefore decreasing our threat for severe weather. However, there is still a chance, especially across western Kentucky, for an embedded strong or severe storm. The rain/storms today will also bring more rain than what we saw overnight. Rain totals may range from less than 0.5″ in parts of Illinois to as much as 1.5″ - 2″ in parts of western Kentucky. As a result, flash flooding may also be possible, mainly in western Kentucky. The bulk of the rain and thunderstorm activity should shift to the east of the Tri-State by around 7-8 pm, wrap-around rain showers will linger overnight into Sunday morning. Lows tonight will drop into the lower 40s. Clouds will linger through the first part of Sunday before gradually clearing through the afternoon and evening. Highs will top out in the upper 40s to around 50.

The weather will remain quiet through the beginning of the work week with mostly sunny skies returning to the forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will rebound back into the mid to upper 50s for Monday before warming up above average for Tuesday where highs may top out in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Our next chance for rain arrives Wednesday with the passage of a cold front. Beyond Wednesday, we’ll cool back down into the 50s and 60s and remain quiet through Thursday and Friday.
