Warming up, showers and storms Tuesday
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - High pressure will slide off to the east today allowing winds to return out of the south. Southerly winds will warm us up ahead of an approaching storm system for Tuesday. Rain and thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday, and even though the severe weather threat has shifted more to the southwest, there is still a low/isolated chance for some stronger storms.
Temperatures will climb back up into the mid-50s today. Some clouds will roll through during the mid-morning hours but overall we can expect a partly cloudy to mostly sunny day. Winds will be out of the southeast between 5-10 mph. Cloud cover will roll back in Monday night with a slight chance of a stray shower overnight. Lows will only drop into the mid-40s.
An area of low pressure will push in from the west on Tuesday. Tuesday morning may feature a few isolated showers but the bulk of the rain and thunderstorms will move in during the late afternoon/evening. The best chance for thunderstorms will be along the frontal boundary as it slides in from the west. The good news is that over the last several model runs, the severe weather threat has trended further to the southwest. However, I am still going to keep the First Alert in for Tuesday as it is still possible for an isolated strong or severe storm to sneak its way into our region. If severe thunderstorms were to materialize the main hazards would be damaging winds, but again the risk is low. Most of the rain/thunderstorm activity will taper off late Tuesday night. Winds will be breezy with gusts up to 30 mph possible out of the south for Tuesday night. Wrap-around rain showers will speckle the Tri-State on Wednesday spotty rain showers may mix with a few flakes Wednesday night but little to no accumulation is expected. While rain/storms will be mostly over on Wednesday I may keep the First Alert up for the potential for strong gradient wind gusts. The pressure gradient will tighten as the center of low pressure passes to our north on Wednesday. Some models indicate winds may gust up to 40+ mph out of the west through the afternoon and evening.
We’ll dry out for Thursday with mostly sunny skies before our next round of some light rain showers moves in for the end of the wrk week.
