EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Fourth Ward City Council member Tanisha Carothers has been charged with fraud and defacing, falsifying, or destroying election documents.

She was arrested and booked into the jail shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

This comes after a former candidate for Evansville City Council, Angela Bullock, filed a complaint against Carothers and notified police.

14 News tried to get the complaint early this month, but we were told it was locked.

However, we did obtain the probable cause affidavit for Carothers.

Police say she lived outside the city limits, meaning she didn’t meet the requirements to be elected.

They say Carothers lied on her paperwork, claiming she did live in city limits.

Police say when they asked her about it, she claims she had two leases at the same time because she forgot one automatically renewed.

According to Indiana law, she needed to live in the Fourth Ward for six months prior to the election.

Police say she also submitted a falsified document in order to receive an employment benefit she was not entitled to.

The chair of the Vanderburgh County Democrats says they have no comment at this time.

She has been released from the jail on $50 cash bond.
