Union County football put up unforgettable, dominant effort, to win region title
MORGANFIELD, KY. (WFIE) - We began last Friday night, with three, high school football teams left in the playoffs. After Friday night, there are still three teams alive! Heritage Hills is going to state next weekend, and in Kentucky, Owensboro Catholic and Union County both reached the semifinals.
The Braves won the KHSAA Class 3A region championship, with a convincing, 41-21 victory, over previously unbeaten, Hart County. Union County set the tone, from the get-go, on defense, with two tackles for loss, on the first two plays, and then when they had the ball, they were rarely ever stopped.
They built a 21-0 lead, into the second quarter, and never looked back. Quarterback Jarren Johnson ran the ball, 23 times for 283 yards and four touchdowns, and was also 6 for 7 thru the air, for another 98 yards and a TD. Needless to say, it was a dominating performance.
“Jarren’s special. He needs to be up for Mr. Football, because he’s that type of player. For the last two years he’s been on the field, he’s been the best player on the field,” said Union County football head coach, Derek Johns. “I’m gonna say 95% of the coaches we play, would say Jarren’s been the best player on the field and ya know, special kid. Jarren deserves everything that he’s got, and I’m so proud of him.”
“We knew we prepared the right way, and we knew what we had to do when we came in here,” said Union County senior, Jarren Johnson. “We did a great job on offense tonight. I don’t think we maybe turned the ball over one time?”
“It shows that we’re hungry. We’ve been looking forward to this, since the loss last year,” said Braves' junior, Cortayvion Rapier. “This is what we’ve worked for all season, all summer. We’re just trying to get to the big one -- two games left.”
So, now Union County will host eastern Kentucky, powerhouse, Belfry, on Friday, November 29, at 7:00, in the KHSAA Football Class 3A semifinals, and it’s the first time, that the Braves have ever hosted a semifinal playoff game.
Also Friday night, in Class 2A, Owensboro Catholic will look to stay unbeaten, as they host Somerset at 7:00, in the semifinal round.
Then on Saturday, November 30, Heritage Hills will play for the IHSAA Football Class 3A state championship, as they take on Fort Wayne Luers, at 2:00 CST, up at Lucas Oil Stadium.
No doubt, it should be a great weekend of high school football playoff action!
