JASPER, Ind. (WFIE) - It was a big Election Day for Senator Mike Braun. He served the Hoosier state in congress, and now he’s moving on to the governor’s mansion.

With over 90% of votes counted, he won his new position by an over 13% margin.

Those who live in Jasper say they’re eager to see what he brings to his new job.

Senator Braun has come a long way since growing up in Jasper, but he’s never strayed far from home.

Those in Jasper say they’ve been keeping an eye on his public career since its more modest beginning.

“We’re so proud of Mike, and just so happy that, really he started out here as a school board member, it seems like not that many years ago,” said Jasper Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Eckerle.

Jasper city leaders say he and his family have always been engaged with the city, whether through their businesses or participation in other local organizations.

They say they’re eager to see his example spread through the rest of the state.

“They will encourage small communities, large communities, to show that community spirit; and to encourage people to be a part of their communities because that’s what helps communities grow,” said Eckerle.

Despite how excited they are to see a hometown boy take office; they aren’t going to go easy on him either when it comes to expectations.

“I was proud, happy, but I would have liked more explanations about how we’re going to support our farmers,” said Jasper resident Sarah Daunhauer.

Local leaders say with a Jasper native moving into the state’s highest office, along with all the other effects, they’re hopeful this draws a bit more attention to this part of the state.

They say Braun prioritizes small businesses, and they expect to see businesses grow across Indiana during his time in office.

“I’m excited to see from a state perspective how that all comes about, I’d say in a fairly short amount of time,” said Eckerle. “I think last night he said he’s taking three days off and then he’s jumping right into this.”

Local leaders say, in all his elected positions, he’s always found ways to be connected and available to his constituents.

They say they hope to see that continue as he moves to the Governor’s mansion.
