Vanderburgh Co. sees large early voting numbers ahead of election
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Early voting is underway in 10 states across the country.
It kicked off last Tuesday, October 8 in Indiana.
This is a big election nationwide with the President and Vice President seats up for grabs.
But there are also many topics on the ballot locally that are peaking people’s interest.
According to Marsha Abel-Barnhart, Clerk of the Circuit Court in Vanderburgh County.
In the first four days of early voting, 2,500 people came to vote early in person.
5,000 mail-in ballots have also been requested and at least 1,300 have already been returned.
Abel-Barnhart says this is a heavy turnout for early voting, especially for Vanderburgh County.
She’s hoping this trend continues into election day.
“If the turnout is what we’re seeing early, it’s going to be a heavy election,” Abel-Barnhart said. “I would love to see over 50%, Vanderburgh County never votes heavy.”
Abel-Barnhart also says more people seem to be voting not just for the presidential seat but for the entire ballot.
“There’s always interest at the top of the ballot, vice president and president. But there is a lot of interest in the down ballot races, and also the judicial races, I’ve heard people talking about it in line. I think there is tremendous amount of interest in the entire ballot as opposed to just the top of the ballot,” said Abel-Barnhart.
You can vote early right now at the Central Library in downtown Evansville every day leading up to the election from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Officials say to be sure you bring a valid form of identification with you.
