‘It is really strict’: Local leaders talk heightened security at RNC
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Republican National Convention continues Tuesday, once again under heightened security following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The RNC always draws the eyes of the nation, but this year’s event may have even more intrigue.
In addition to serving in the military, Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman is in Milwaukee serving as one of Kentucky’s 46 delegates. He says the security presence was almost comparable to what he saw while serving in Iraq.
“Probably the thing that reminded me the most of being overseas, and this is not a bad thing, this is a good thing, when we first got here we went to our first reception and there were literally helicopters circling above head,” Youngman said.
State Senator Robby Mills is another one of Kentucky’s delegates. He says it took an hour to get through security Monday.
“It is really strict,” Mills said. “I think they said they doubled or tripled security after the incidents with President Trump.”
The increased safety is understandable following the attempt on the former President’s life. It’s also understandable that the assassination attempt is still a hot topic of conversation at the RNC; however, Youngman says it’s not the biggest.
“The biggest buzz right now is about unity,” Youngman said. “That’s both sides of the aisle. Everybody that you talk to is saying that this country has got to come together.”
Mills agrees, and says Monday night at the convention was a step in that direction, especially seeing Trump’s first public appearance since the attempted assassination.
“It looked like he was very emotional from what I saw,” Mills said. “I think this will change him and change his process of how politics are done from his standpoint moving forward, and I hope it does across the board.”
Mills, Youngman and the other delegates will remain in Milwaukee through Thursday when the RNC ends. That’s the day Trump is expected to speak to close out the convention.
